While it still has the largest fishing fleet of the entire Costa Brava leaving port every morning, Roses has changed fundamentally over the past five decades. Tourism was the catalyst for an evolutionary process that saw Roses develop from fishing village to Mediterranean resort town. But even if 20,000 permanent residents call it their home by now, Roses has managed to preserve most of the charm that attracted the first visitors from abroad. And that does not only refer to the first waves of tourists from France and Germany in the early 1960s.
One can trace the origins of Roses all the way back to the 4th century BC, when seafaring visitors from the Isle of Rhodes settled here after crossing a good part of the Mediterranean.
